By creating an Unseen account you agree to these Terms, our Privacy Policy and our Refund Policy. Unseen is for adults aged 18 and over, in the United Kingdom.
1. About these terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a legal agreement between you and UNIPIA Ltd ("we", "us", "our"), a company registered in England and Wales, governing your use of the Unseen dating app ("the app", "Unseen", "the Service").
By creating an account, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms, our Privacy Policy, and our Refund Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you in the app before the changes take effect. Continued use of the Service after notification constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
2. Eligibility
2.1 You must be at least 18 years of age to create an account or use the Service. This is a hard requirement with no exceptions. Your date of birth is verified server-side during registration.
2.2 The Service is currently available in the United Kingdom only (v1 launch market).
2.3 By creating an account, you confirm that:
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You are legally able to enter into a binding agreement.
- You are not prohibited from using the Service under any applicable law.
- You will not create more than one account.
2.4 If we discover that you are under 18, we will immediately terminate your account and delete all associated data without notice.
3. Your account
3.1 You can create an account using Google OAuth, Apple Sign In, or email login. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your login credentials.
3.2 Email verification: If you register with an email address, we will send a 6-digit verification code to the email address you provide. You must enter this code to verify your email address. Verification codes expire after 10 minutes and are limited to 5 entry attempts per code. You may request a new code up to 3 times per hour. Email verification may be required before you can fully use the Service.
3.3 You must not share your account with anyone else or allow anyone else to access your account.
3.4 You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account.
3.5 You must notify us immediately at legal@unipia.co.uk if you believe your account has been compromised.
3.6 Service emails: By creating an account, you agree to receive transactional emails necessary for the operation of your account, including email verification codes, password reset links, and account deletion confirmations. These are not marketing communications and cannot be opted out of while your account is active, as they are essential for account security and service operation.
4. Profile authenticity
4.1 All information you provide during onboarding and on your profile must be genuine and accurate. This includes your username, date of birth, gender, occupation, and voice memo.
4.2 You must not impersonate any other person or entity, or misrepresent your identity, age, or affiliation.
4.3 If you upload a profile photo, it must be a genuine photo of you. Uploading photos of another person, AI-generated images representing a different person, or deliberately misleading images constitutes a material breach of these Terms.
4.4 Your username (2-30 characters) is checked for harmful content. Usernames that are offensive, misleading, or that impersonate others will be rejected.
4.5 We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that contain inaccurate, fraudulent, or misleading profile information.
5. Voice memo content guidelines
5.1 Unseen is a voice-first dating app. You are required to record a voice memo (up to 10 seconds, .m4a format) reading a phrase you have written. This voice memo is the primary way other users discover you.
5.2 Your voice memo and written phrase must not contain:
- Hate speech or content promoting violence or hatred against any person or group, including on the basis of protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.
- Threats, harassment, or intimidation.
- Sexually explicit or pornographic content.
- Content that encourages or glorifies self-harm, suicide, or eating disorders.
- Personal contact details (phone numbers, email addresses, social media handles, home addresses).
- Commercial advertising or solicitation.
- Content that is illegal under the laws of England and Wales.
- Content that would constitute an offence under the UK Online Safety Act 2023 (including but not limited to: illegal content, content harmful to adults).
5.3 Voice memos are automatically moderated using speech-to-text transcription and content analysis. Content that fails automated moderation is rejected, and you will be notified. You may re-record and re-submit.
5.4 You retain ownership of your voice memo content. By uploading a voice memo, you grant UNIPIA Ltd a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, transmit, and display your voice memo to other users of the Service for the purpose of operating the matching and discovery features. This licence ends when you delete your voice memo or your account.
6. Account conduct and prohibited behaviour
6.1 You agree to treat all other users with dignity and respect.
6.2 You must not:
- Harass, intimidate, threaten, stalk, or bully any user.
- Discriminate against any user on the basis of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation, as protected under the Equality Act 2010.
- Send repeated, unwanted communications after a user has indicated they do not wish to continue contact.
- Send or solicit sexually explicit material without prior, clear, and mutual consent.
- Make any communication that could reasonably cause another person to fear for their safety.
- Use the Service for any commercial purpose, including advertising, soliciting, or promoting any product, service, or scheme, without the prior written consent of UNIPIA Ltd.
- Use the Service to commit or facilitate any criminal offence.
- Attempt to circumvent any security measures, content moderation, or blocking features.
- Scrape, harvest, or collect data about other users.
- Use bots, scripts, or automated tools to interact with the Service.
- Create multiple accounts or create a new account after being suspended or terminated.
6.3 Violation of any of these rules may result in content removal, temporary suspension, or permanent termination of your account, at our sole discretion.
7. Messaging, slots, and tokens
7.1 How messaging works
7.1.1 When you and another user both show interest (mutual swipe), a match is created when the first message is sent.
7.1.2 Sending a first message to a new match requires both an available slot and an available token (see Sections 7.2 and 7.3 below). One slot and one token are consumed together when you send the first message to a new conversation partner. Subsequent messages within an existing conversation do not consume slots or tokens.
7.2 Slots (inbox capacity)
7.2.1 Daily slots: Each day, you receive a limited number of "slots" that represent your capacity to hold active conversations. Slots control how many new conversations you can open:
- Male users: 3 daily slots.
- Female, Non-binary, and Prefer-not-to-say users: 6 daily slots.
- Slots reset at your local midnight.
7.2.2 Unused daily slots do not carry over to the next day.
7.2.3 Note on gender-based allocation: We are taking legal advice on whether different allocations by gender comply with the Equality Act 2010. This allocation is intended as a positive action measure under s.158 of the Equality Act 2010 and may change.
7.3 Tokens (conversation initiation permits)
7.3.1 What tokens are: A token is a conversation initiation permit. You must spend one token each time you send a first message to a new conversation partner. Tokens are separate from slots and work alongside them — you need both an available slot and an available token to start a new conversation.
7.3.2 Weekly free allocation: Every user receives 3 free tokens per week, regardless of gender. Free tokens are allocated at the start of each week and reset every Monday at midnight UTC.
7.3.3 Unused free tokens do not carry over. At the start of each weekly reset, any unspent free tokens from the previous week are forfeited and replaced with a fresh allocation of 3 free tokens.
7.3.4 Purchased tokens do not expire. Tokens that you purchase (see Section 8) remain in your account until used. They are not affected by the weekly reset.
7.3.5 Consumption order: When you send a first message, free tokens are consumed before purchased tokens. This means your purchased tokens are only used once your free weekly allocation has been exhausted.
7.3.6 No transfer or exchange. Tokens cannot be transferred to another user, exchanged for other features, or converted to cash or any other form of value.
8. Purchases and payments
8.1 In-app purchases (slots and tokens)
8.1.1 You can purchase additional message slots and additional tokens through in-app purchases. All purchases are processed through Apple In-App Purchase (IAP) on iOS or Google Play Billing on Android. We do not accept direct payments via Stripe or any other payment method for in-app digital content.
8.1.2 Current slot pricing (subject to change):
- First additional +3 slots: GBP 3.49
- Additional +2 slots: GBP 3.49
- Additional +1 slot: GBP 4.99
8.1.3 Current token pricing (subject to change):
- Token Bundle (5 tokens): GBP 3.49
- Token Pack (3 tokens): GBP 2.49
- Single Token (1 token): GBP 0.99
8.1.4 All prices are inclusive of applicable VAT.
8.1.5 UNIPIA Ltd does not receive or store your payment card details, bank account information, or billing address. All payment processing is handled by Apple or Google.
8.2 Digital content waiver (UK Consumer Rights Act 2015)
8.2.1 Slot purchases and token purchases are digital content within the meaning of the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
8.2.2 When you purchase slots or tokens, you acknowledge and agree that:
- The digital content (message slots or tokens, as applicable) will be made available to you immediately upon purchase.
- You expressly consent to the immediate supply of this digital content.
- You acknowledge that you will lose your right to cancel under the 14-day cooling-off period (Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, Regulation 37) once the digital content has been supplied.
8.2.3 This waiver is presented to you in the purchase flow within the app, and you must actively confirm it before the purchase is processed. This applies to all in-app purchases, including both slot purchases and token purchases.
8.3 Refunds
8.3.1 Refunds for slot and token purchases are handled by Apple or Google through their respective platforms, in accordance with their refund policies.
8.3.2 If Apple or Google issue a refund, we are notified and the purchased slots or tokens (as applicable) will be removed from your account.
8.3.3 We will honour refund requests where required under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or other applicable UK consumer protection legislation. For example, if the digital content is faulty or not as described.
8.3.4 For full details, see our Refund Policy.
9. Contact blocking
9.1 Unseen offers a contact blocking feature to protect your privacy. If you choose to import your phone contacts, users who appear in your contact list (and vice versa) are automatically hidden from each other.
9.2 Contact blocking uses a one-way cryptographic hash (HMAC-SHA-256). Your raw phone numbers never leave your device.
9.3 Contact blocking is bidirectional: if you are in someone's contacts and they are in yours, neither of you will see the other in Discovery.
9.4 You can enable or disable contact importing at any time in Settings.
10. Content moderation
10.1 Automated moderation
10.1.1 We use automated systems to moderate user-generated content, including voice memos, usernames, and occupation text.
10.1.2 Voice memos are automatically transcribed and analysed for harmful content. Content that fails automated moderation is rejected. Transcripts are processed in memory only and are not stored.
10.1.3 If your content is rejected by an automated system, you will be notified with a generic reason. You may re-submit or request a human review.
10.2 User reporting and enforcement
10.2.1 You can report any user or content that you believe violates these Terms, our community guidelines, or applicable law. Reports can be made from Discovery, chat, and profile screens within the app.
10.2.2 Reportable violations. You may report content or behaviour in the following categories: harassment, fake profile, spam, inappropriate content, underage user, threatening behaviour, hate speech, inappropriate username, inappropriate quote, inappropriate message, fake photo, scam, or other.
10.2.3 Evidence capture. When you submit a report, we may capture a snapshot of the reported content (such as a message, username, or profile quote) at the time of reporting. This is necessary because some content (such as chat messages) is automatically deleted after 30 days, and the snapshot ensures our moderation team can review the report even if the original content has since been removed. See our Privacy Policy, Section 10.2 for full details of what data is collected during reporting.
10.2.4 Enforcement actions. Based on the outcome of a moderation review, we may take one or more of the following actions against a user who has violated these Terms:
- Warning: A formal notice that the behaviour violates these Terms.
- Username reset: Your username may be replaced with a system-generated placeholder if it is found to be offensive, misleading, or in violation of these Terms. You may choose a new username, subject to moderation.
- Quote removal: Your profile quote may be removed if it violates our content guidelines.
- Photo removal: Your profile photo may be deleted from our systems if it violates our content guidelines or is not a genuine photo of you.
- Temporary mute: You may be prevented from sending messages for a fixed period (24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days) if your messaging behaviour violates these Terms.
- Account suspension or permanent ban: Your account may be temporarily suspended or permanently terminated for serious or repeated violations.
10.2.5 If we take an enforcement action against your account, we will notify you of the action taken. You may appeal by contacting legal@unipia.co.uk.
10.2.6 We comply with the UK Online Safety Act 2023 obligations regarding illegal content and our duties as a service likely to be accessed by adults.
10.3 User blocking
10.3.1 You can block any user at any time. Blocking is bidirectional — once you block someone, neither of you will see each other or be able to communicate.
11. Account termination and suspension
11.1 By you: You can delete your account at any time from Settings > Account > Delete Account. This option is one tap away. Account deletion is processed within 24 hours and removes all your personal data, including voice memos, profile photos, conversation starter answers, hobby tags, contact hashes, and all associated records from cloud storage. If you request deletion via the web form, you will receive a confirmation email at your registered email address. This action cannot be undone.
11.2 By us: We may suspend or terminate your account, without prior notice, if:
- You violate these Terms.
- We are required to do so by law, regulation, or court order.
- We reasonably believe your account poses a risk to other users or to the integrity of the Service.
- You have been inactive for 12 months (with prior email warning — see our Privacy Policy, Section 11).
11.3 If we terminate your account, we will inform you of the reason unless prohibited by law. You may appeal by contacting legal@unipia.co.uk.
11.4 Termination does not affect any rights or obligations that accrued before termination.
12. Intellectual property
12.1 The Unseen app, including its design, features, branding, and code, is owned by UNIPIA Ltd and protected by intellectual property law.
12.2 You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or create derivative works based on the app without our prior written consent.
12.3 You retain ownership of the content you create (voice memos, profile text). The licence you grant us is described in Section 5.4.
13. Limitation of liability
13.1 To the maximum extent permitted by law, UNIPIA Ltd's aggregate liability to you for any claim arising from or in connection with your use of the Service shall not exceed the greater of:
- (a) the total fees you paid to UNIPIA Ltd in the 12 months immediately preceding the claim; or
- (b) one hundred pounds sterling (GBP 100).
13.2 We do not exclude or limit our liability for:
- Death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
- Fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.
- Any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited by English law.
13.3 We are not responsible for the conduct, actions, or content of other users. You interact with other users at your own risk.
13.4 We do not guarantee that the Service will be available at all times, error-free, or free from interruption.
13.5 We do not verify the identity of users beyond the information provided during registration. We do not conduct criminal background checks.
14. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless UNIPIA Ltd, its directors, officers, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from:
- Your use of the Service.
- Your violation of these Terms.
- Your violation of any rights of a third party.
- Content you post or transmit through the Service.
15. UK Online Safety Act 2023 compliance
15.1 Unseen is a user-to-user service within the scope of the UK Online Safety Act 2023 ("OSA").
15.2 We have duties under the OSA regarding:
- Illegal content: We take steps to prevent, identify, and remove illegal content. Users can report illegal content, and we act on reports promptly. Reports involving potentially illegal content (underage users, threats, hate speech) are classified as critical severity and prioritised for immediate review.
- Content harmful to adults: We assess and mitigate risks from content that is harmful to adults, including content that is abusive, threatening, or promotes self-harm.
- User reporting: We provide accessible, context-specific reporting tools across Discovery, chat, and profile screens, with 13 report categories covering the full range of harmful and illegal content. This satisfies our duty under OSA s.20 to provide easily accessible and effective user reporting mechanisms.
- Age verification: We require users to confirm they are 18 or older. We are monitoring Ofcom guidance on highly effective age assurance and will implement additional measures if required.
15.3 Our transparency reporting obligations under the OSA will be met through published transparency reports when required by Ofcom.
16. Dispute resolution
16.1 If you have a complaint about the Service, please contact us first at legal@unipia.co.uk. We will try to resolve your complaint informally.
16.2 If we cannot resolve your complaint informally, you may pursue formal dispute resolution through the courts of England and Wales.
16.3 Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer under UK law, including your right to bring proceedings in a court in the part of the United Kingdom in which you are domiciled.
17. Governing law and jurisdiction
17.1 These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales.
17.2 Each party irrevocably agrees that the courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction to settle any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with these Terms, subject to Section 16.3.
18. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable by a court, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
19. Entire agreement
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Refund Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and UNIPIA Ltd regarding your use of the Service.
